Keeping an eye on the skies
Observed annually on 30 June, International Asteroid Day is dedicated to raising awareness about asteroid impact hazards and global planetary defense. Commemorating the 1908 Tunguska impact over Siberia, the day emphasizes the critical need for tracking near-Earth objects (NEOs) and strengthening crisis communication networks. Asteroid Day also serves as a building block for the upcoming International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence in 2029. This global campaign will coincide with a rare cosmic event: on 13 April 2029, the asteroid 99942 Apophis will safely fly closer to Earth, making it visible to billions of people with the naked eye under clear night skies.
