When food ends up in the trash, the planet pays the bill
This International Day of Zero Waste (30 March) spotlights food: what we eat, what we waste, and how to move towards a more circular future. The world throws away about 1 billion tonnes of edible food yearly, with 60% wasted at home and the rest across food service and retail due to inefficient systems. Moving to circularity requires everyone: governments must strengthen policies and public–private partnerships; businesses must set food waste reduction targets and innovate; consumers must plan, store and cook mindfully to cut waste. A zero‑waste future is possible when we all act together.
