About us

The global nature of challenges affecting our world makes multilateral cooperation more important than ever, and the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management enables the United Nations to fulfil its purpose as an effective forum for that cooperation. The Department provides the essential substantive and technical support, multilingual services and tools needed for nations to come together to discuss issues of common interest.

With some 1,800 conference management staff located at United Nations Headquarters in New York and at the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi, the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management is the largest department in the United Nations Secretariat.

We come from all corners of the world and have diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. However, as international civil servants, we share one defining characteristic: we are motivated by the noble purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

Our work

Our work is central to the mandate and functioning of the United Nations as an international forum within which representatives of Member States and other stakeholders meet to deliberate on the major questions facing the world today, and propose answers to those questions.

Our mission is to facilitate and enhance dialogue and cooperation among Member States and, by doing so, contribute to the realization of the objectives of the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Using complex cutting-edge technologies, the Department responds to requests for increasingly diverse services by seizing the transformational opportunities offered by the fourth industrial revolution. In many cases, multidisciplinary approaches and creative partnerships have been required; in every case, innovation has been crucial.

The Department is committed to continuing to focus on, and enhance, its core business of delivering high-quality meetings and documentation services in an efficient and effective manner. Against the backdrop of an ever-changing environment and in line with evolving client expectations, the United Nations conference services are becoming nimbler and more versatile.
