The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management is headed by an Under-Secretary-General, who is responsible for all the activities of the Department, as well as its administration, and represents the Secretary-General in meetings related to the functions of the Department and in intergovernmental and expert bodies as required. The Under-Secretary-General’s responsibilities also encompass guiding integrated global conference management involving Headquarters and the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi, which includes the establishment of conference management policies and standards and the allocation of resources and capacity among the conference-servicing operations in order to ensure the optimal delivery of the workload at the four duty stations. The Under-Secretary-General serves as the Secretariat-wide Coordinator for Multilingualism, is the lead for multilingualism-related matters at the United Nations system level and chairs the International Annual Meeting on Language Arrangements, Documentation and Publications.

Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management

The Assistant Secretary-General is the deputy to the Under-Secretary-General and assumes responsibility for all operational activities at Headquarters and the policy-setting activities of the Department. The Assistant Secretary-General serves as the focal point for integrated global conference management issues and in this capacity, as additional reporting officer for the heads of the conference management operations at the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. The Assistant Secretary-General also serves as Officer-in-Charge of the Department in the absence of the Under-Secretary-General.
