Safe migration, conflict prevention, sustainable development and United Nations reform will be the priorities of the 72nd UN General Assembly over the coming year, the 193-member body’s President, Miroslav Lajčák, said on Wednesday.
The UN Special Representative for International Migration, Peter Sutherland, said a series of comprehensive initiatives is needed to drive home – and effectively address – the global nature of the issue.
The number of international migrants -- persons living in a country other than where they were born -- reached 244 million in 2015 for the world as a whole, a 41 per cent increase compared to 2000, according to new data presented by the United Nations today. This figure includes almost 20 million refugees.
