Why is this action important?

Safeguarding the needs and interests of future generations has long been part of international discussions – but for the first time, it is formally enshrined in an agreed UN Declaration. Decisions made today will shape the lives of generations yet to be born. This action equips the UN to help countries embed long-term thinking in policymaking, using science, data and foresight to assess the future impact of today’s choices. It ensures that governments can plan long-term – for people, planet and posterity.

What happens next?

The Future Generations Working Group established within the UN Secretariat will present its strategic framework to the Steering Committee for its approval towards the end of 2025.
