Take note of the Secretary-General’s proposal to appoint a Special Envoy for Future Generations to support the implementation of this Declaration.
UN entity lead: Executive Office of the Secretary-General
Milestone 1 | Deadline 31 July 2025
Terms of reference and budget proposals for the Special Envoy for Future Generations ready for consideration when relevant.
Why is this action important?
Safeguarding the needs and interests of future generations is a shared goal enshrined for the first time in international agreements in the Declaration on Future Generations. The Secretary-General proposes the establishment of a centre of leadership in the UN system to drive this agenda forward, at least until it is fully mainstreamed across the system. This action supports the creation of a UN Special Envoy for Future Generations, to support Member States implement the Declaration and safeguard the needs and interests of future generations in their policy and decision-making. It ensures that the UN can advocate for policies that look beyond short-term cycles and protect the well-being of those yet to be born.
What happens next?
Due to ongoing reform efforts and the current financial situation of the United Nations, the appointment of the Special Envoy for Future Generations is temporarily on hold, pending further decisions by Member States, including in the context of the UN80 initiative.
