Short-term Staff
Eligibility
All staff members holding appointments of three months or longer may enroll themselves and eligible dependants in the UN health insurance programme. If you are holding a temporary appointment of less than three months, you are eligible to enroll in the UN short-term medical insurance plan insured by Cigna on an individual basis only and based on availability. You can enroll through:
- UN Secretariat: Umoja employee self-service (ESS)
- UNDP: Atlas
- UNICEF: SAP system
- UNOPS: oneUNOPS
Please note that staff members enrolled in the short-term medical insurance plan will be required to switch to one of the regular (self-funded) health insurance plans upon extension of such temporary appointment beyond three months.

Enrollment
To enroll in the optional insurance plan or speak to a plan representative, please contact and submit the Short Term Insurance Application Form directly to the plan administrator via un.shortterm@cigna.com.
Claim Process
To file a claim, please follow the steps below:

Complete a claim form which you may access on the Plan Members tab of the Cigna website and by using the following log-in credentials:
- Username: 159/UNTEM
- DOB: 01/01/2000
- Send the completed form plus all supporting documents (e.g., receipts, medical reports, etc.) to the UN Health & Life Insurance Section at hlis@un.org.
- If you were in an accident, please also complete and sign the "Notification of accident" form also available on the website.

Does the UN provide health insurance coverage for me as short-term staff (less than 3-month contract)?
If you are a staff member holding a temporary appointment of less than three months, you are eligible to enroll in the United Nations short-term medical insurance plan insured by Cigna on an individual basis only, based on availability. Information regarding the insurance programme for temporary appointments of less than three months can be obtained from the Health and Life Insurance Section. Once enrolled in the short-term medical insurance plan, you will be required to transfer to one of the regular medical insurance plans upon extension of your temporary appointment beyond three months.
Is there an ID card for members enrolled in the UN short-term plan?
No ID card is issued, however, should a claim incur, a member of the UN HLIS would verify your enrollment/membership by signing and validating the claim form for submission.
