Mr. Alexander Marschik (Austria)

Mr. Alexander Marschik is currently serving as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in New York.

Before his latest appointment, Mr. Marschik was Director General for Bilateral Affairs, European Union Common Foreign Policy and Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria since 2018. He previously served as Director General for International Affairs and Political Director from 2015 to 2018 and as Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee of the European Union, in Brussels, from 2011 to 2015. 

From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Marschik served as the Director for Disarmament, Arms Control and Non Proliferation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He chaired Subsidiary Body 1 (disarmament) at the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. From 2003 to 2006, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations. 

Over his three decades in government service, Mr. Marschik has held such positions as Legal and Political Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in New York from 1999 to 2003. He was Head of the General Affairs Council Unit in the European Union Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 1999 and First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva in 1997.

Mr. Marschik holds master’s and doctoral degrees in law from the University of Vienna and postgraduate degrees from Sorbonne University in France, the Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands and the Academy of European Law at the European University Institute in Italy.
