Audubon Mural Project held on Zoom, 19 August 2020
AFICS NY Social Committee invited its members to a virtual guided tour of the Audubon Mural Project on Wednesday, 19 August 2020 from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon given by Ms. Leigh Hallingby, a licensed NYC tour guide.
The Audubon Bird Mural Project is an impressive effort to create murals of over 300 North American birds. Most of the murals are in the Harlem neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights, where John James Audubon lived the last ten years of his life. Since all of the birds painted are threatened by climate change, the Project is designed not only to display the birds’ beauty, but also to make us aware of the challenges that they face. The artworks range from lovely panels that fill in a former window to spectacular murals covering the entire side of a building. We saw about 40 murals, plus Audubon’s grave site, in a slide presentation with live commentary. There was Q&A afterwards.
The virtual tour was conducted via Zoom, an app that should be downloaded to your device, laptop or computer in order for you to access the link for the tour.
The link was sent to those who respond in the affirmative.

The Social Committee of AFICS/NY arranged a three-day excursion from 11-14 September 2018 to the Chelka Lodge on beautiful Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
The excursion to Lake George was enjoyed by the group of 11 participants, in no small part due to the weather that was better than forecast. There was a meet and greet gathering at the Chelka Lodge where the group stayed, followed by dinner at a lakeside restaurant at Bolton’s Landing. The events for the next few days were based on popular choice starting with a visit to the Natural Stone Bridge & Caves in Pottersville, NY, then lunch at The Sagamore Hotel and a delicious dinner at the elegant Inn at Erlowest where Restaurant Week was appreciated by all! The Lake George Steamship company luncheon cruise on Wednesday 13 September was delightful as the Red Hatters chapter of Lake George hosted their annual event that day with live music and dancing for all. The sportier among the group went hiking, swimming, kayaking and played ping pong on the grounds, while some relaxed on the lounge chairs enjoying the awesome view. On the way back home, the group visited the city of Saratoga Springs where they had lunch at the newly renovated Adelphi Hotel.
A good time was had by all!
