High–Level Briefing on the National Strategy and Action Plan of the Republic of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism for 2021 - 2025

On 22 April, the United Nations Office on Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) in partnership with the Republic of Tajikistan, is convening a high-level briefing on the “National Strategy and Action Plan of the Republic of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism for 2021-2025” at UN Headquarters in New York.
The briefing is organized as part of the STRIVE Asia Programme, a joint EU-UN initiative that supports member states in Central, South, and South-East Asia with the prevention and countering of terrorism (PCVE), with the support of the joint UNOCT and United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) project “Towards a Comprehensive Implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia – Phase IV”. The in-person event brings together government officials from the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as member state experts on preventing and countering violent extremism, personnel from across collaborating United Nations agencies, and participants from various international, regional, and specialized organizations. The objective of the High-Level Briefing is to highlight the progress of Tajikistan and its efforts to implement a new National Action Plan (NAP) that seeks to address the challenges faced by radicalization and extremism.
The opening segment of the briefing includes statements by Mr.Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, H.E. Ambassador Mr. Jonibek Hikmat, Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations, H.E. Ambassador Mr. Olof Skoog, Head of Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations, Ms. Nidaa AbuAli, Counsellor, Head of Legal Committee and Counter Terrorism, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, Ms. Sezin Sinanoglu, UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan and Mr. Armands Pupols, Human Rights and Political Affairs Officer, UNRCCA.
The opening segment is followed by a presentation on the National Action Plan of Tajikistan delivered by Mr. Rahmon Yusuf Ahmadzod, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Tajikistan. Thereafter, discussions on challenges, opportunities, international standards and good practices for the implementation of counter-terrorism and PCVE strategies in Central Asia and beyond will be held.
Two afternoon sessions will highlight the ongoing projects and activities on PCVE in Tajikistan, as well as Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) mechanisms articulated within the National Action Plan.
