New York, 9 August 2002 – on the situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine
The Secretary-General has repeatedly and consistently stated, as he did after the recent meeting of the Quartet, that it is up to the Palestinian people to elect their leaders. President Arafat has been elected by the Palestinian people and the United Nations will continue to deal with him in this capacity. On the same basis, the UN will deal with the leaders elected in the Palestinian elections announced for early next year.
