Situation in the OPT/Dissolution of elected city councils, Dura, Nablus – Letter from CEIRPP Chairman

GENERAL ASSEMBLY SECURITY COUNCIL  Thirty-seventh session Thirty-seventh year

Item 31 of the preliminary list*

QUESTION OF PALESTINE

Letter dated 18 June 1982 from the Chairman of the Committee

on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian

 People to the Secretary-General

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People has already had many occasions to bring to your attention several instances of Israeli actions which carried grave implications for the economic, social and political well-being of the Palestinian people and which constituted grave violations of relevant United Nations resolutions.

I regret once more having to bring to your attention another grave action by the Israeli Government which has also been reported by The New York Times.

This time, Israel has dissolved the elected city councils of two West Bank towns, Dura and Nablus.

The Committee is bound to express its gravest concern regarding this new Israeli action which can only aggravate the already extremely tense situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and thereby increase the threat to international peace and security in the region.

The Committee feels strongly that the strictest respect for the relevant resolutions of the United Nations should be ensured, in particular those aimed at enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights.

I should be grateful if you would kindly have the text of this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under item 31 of the preliminary list, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Massamba SARRE

Chairman of the

Committee on the Exercise

 of the Inalienable Rights

 of the Palestinian People
