UNOCT PARTICIPATES AT THE PARLATINO ASSEMBLY ON CITIZEN SECURITY, COMBATTING AND PREVENTING DRUG TRAFFICKING, TERRORISM, AND ORGANIZED CRIME
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement participated in the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) Assembly on “Citizen Security, Combatting and Preventing Drug Trafficking, Terrorism and Organized Crime”, held in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, on 5 and 6 September 2022.
The event consisted of two Assemblies; a Plenary of the participating Commissions of PARLATINO and the Assembly of the Commissions for “Citizen Security, Combatting and Preventing Drug Trafficking, Terrorism and Organized Crime” and “Environment and Tourism”. The aim was to review regional obligations and challenges and to act decisively in the search for approaches to reduce and alleviate the challenges in countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism (CT&PVE) in the region.
Participants included the President and board of directors of PARLATINO, 30 representatives from the 23 national parliament members of Latin American and Caribbean countries, and the Chief (a.i.) of the UNOCT Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement.
During the Plenary Session attended by the PARLATINO President, Secretary-General, Executive Secretary, board of directors, and parliamentarians, UNOCT presented the work of its Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism and explored possible means for collaboration and areas for the provision of technical assistance. During the subsequent session of the “Commission on Citizen Security, Combatting and Preventing Drug Trafficking, Terrorism and Organized Crime” UNOCT discussed the role of parliamentarians in the development and implementation of CT&PVE legislation, policies, and strategies, as well as a potential update of the model law on terrorism.
PARLATINO is an active member of the UNOCT Coordination Mechanism for Parliamentary Assemblies on CT&PVE. The Coordination Mechanism serves as a sharing and exchange platform, a capacity building and technical assistance resource, a coordination & cooperation facilitation centre, and as an awareness-raising and communication channel.
