The HLPF 2016 (11-20 July 2016, NY) was the first after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, setting the framework for the next 15 years’ implementation. The theme of the HLPF 2016 is “Ensuring that no one is left behind”.
UNPFII’s substantive inputs to HLPF 2016
As a subsidiary body to the Economic and Social Council, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues provided substantive inputs to the thematic reviews of the High Level Political Forum 2016, highlighting what is needed to ensure that indigenous peoples are not left behind in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. HLPF Side Event on “Securing the Rights and Contributions of Indigenous Peoples in the 2030 Agenda”
A side event took place on 15 July with the aim to discuss and provide strategic policy guidance on how to ensure that indigenous are not left behind in the 2030 Agenda – and how to enhance their roles and contributions to sustainable development. The side event is organised by the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (SPFII/DSPD/DESA) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Australia to the United Nations.

UNPFII participation at HLPF
The UNPFII has been actively engaged during the High Level Political Forum. UNPFII Chair, Alvaro Pop Ac, was invited to give a statement as a lead discussant at the panel “Ensuring that no one is left behind – envisioning an inclusive world in 2030” on the opening day of the High Level Political Forum. In addition, UNPFII expert member, Ms. Joan Carling, who is the focal person on the 2030 Agenda, attended the High Level Political Forum throughout and spoke at several panels and side events to ensure that indigenous peoples’ priorities and rights are at the front of the discussions of the 2030 Agenda.
