Tenth emergency special session
Agenda item 5
Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory
Letter dated 5 June 2025 from the Permanent Representatives of Cameroon and Yemen to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly
We write to you today in our respective capacities as the Chairs of the Arab Group and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Group at the United Nations in New York to request the resumption of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly.
This urgent request is being made following the veto cast by a permanent member of the Security Council on 4 June 2025, obstructing the adoption of a draft resolution demanding, inter alia, an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the lifting of the Israeli blockade and immediate, unimpeded humanitarian access.
The General Assembly must act swiftly in light of the Security Council’s paralysis and the dangerous further deterioration of the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the mounting casualties, forced displacement and threats to the survival of the Palestinian civilian population and dire situation across the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as Israel, the occupying Power, persists with its military aggression, inhumane siege and illegal policies and practices in grave and flagrant breach of international law.
Recalling the General Assembly’s Charter duties, all relevant resolutions and the permanent responsibility of the United Nations towards the question of Palestine until it is justly resolved in all of its aspects in accordance with international law, we therefore request the resumption of the tenth emergency special session, in accordance with resolution 377 (V) of 1950, entitled “Uniting for peace”, as rapidly as possible, to address this grave situation, to ensure the protection of civilians and to uphold international legal and humanitarian obligations.
