Letter to the President of General Assembly by OIC, Arab Group and NAM – request for the resumption of 10th Emergency Special Session of General Assembly (A/ES-10/1016)

25 November 2024

Tenth emergency special session

Agenda item 5

Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory

Letter dated 21 November 2024 from the representatives of Cameroon, Lebanon and Uganda to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly

We write to you today in our respective capacities as the Chairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Group, the Arab Group and the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement at the United Nations in New York to respectfully request the swift resumption of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly.

This urgent request is being made in light of the veto cast by a permanent member of the Security Council on 20 November 2024, obstructing the adoption of a draft resolution demanding, inter alia, an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and in light of the dangerous exacerbation of the already-catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the dire situation being faced by the Palestinian people in the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as well as the unprecedented crisis being faced by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, due to the ongoing military aggression by and illegal policies and practices of Israel, the occupying Power.

The General Assembly, in accordance with its duties under the Charter of the United Nations, all relevant resolutions and the permanent responsibility of the United Nations towards the question of Palestine until it is justly resolved in all of its aspects in accordance with international law, must act urgently to address this grave situation. We therefore make this appeal for the resumption of the tenth emergency special session, in accordance with resolution 377 (V) of 1950, entitled “Uniting for Peace”, as rapidly as possible.
