11 February 1948

UNITED NATIONS PALESTINE COMMISSION

Communication received from Mr. Fletcher-Cooke, United

Kingdom Delegation, Concerning Questions on Security

and the Commission’s Discharge of its Administrative
 Responsibilities.

The following communication concerning questions on Security and the Commission’s Administrative Responsibilities, which were put to the representative of the Mandatory Power on 30 January, is circulated for the information of the Members of the Commission.

UNITED KINGDOM DELEGATION TO THE UNITED NATIONS

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

NEW YORK 1, N. Y.

9th February, 1948.

Dear Bunche,

You will remember that when the United Kingdom appeared before the Commission on 30th January to answer certain questions under the headings (A) Security and (B) The Commission’s Discharge of its Administrative Responsibilities, the information necessary to answer Question B(8) was not available.

I now enclose two Schedules showing respectively

(1) the numbers in each Department of (a) British, (b) Arab, (c) Jewish and (d) other personnel, and

(2) the numbers and ranks by communities of the Government Officers in each Department / ranks shown in the Schedule are

1st division officers

I

2nd division officers

II

subordinate staff (exclusive of labourers and police other ranks)

III

You will appreciate that neither of these Schedules contain any reference to police other ranks and that the only police staff shown are senior police officers and clerical staff.

As I have only received one copy of each of these schedules, and as no doubt you will have to have a number of copies made, I should be most grateful if you could supply me with three copies of each of the Schedules.

yours sincerely,

(signed)

(J. Fletcher-Cooke)

Dr. Ralph J. Blanche,

Principal Secretary to the United Nations

Commission for Palestine,

United Nations,

Lake Success,

New York.
