East Jerusalem, 01 December 2016 – The Government of Sweden and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed a SEK 40 million (USD 4.4 million) contribution to the Community Resilience and Development Programme (CRDP) in support of the Palestinian population living in Area C and East Jerusalem. The additional resources will bring Sweden’s total contribution to the CRDP programme to SEK 130 million.

“The new contribution will support strategic interventions that will facilitate employment opportunities, especially for women and youth, improve access to health services and planning for better affordable housing in East Jerusalem through planning, in partnership with civil society organizations, said Ann-Sofie Nilsson, Swedish Consul General in Jerusalem.

In addition, there will be a continuation of the implementation of projects in Qalqilya and Tubas clusters, based on a community driven approach. Partnerships and modalities of implementation throughout the programme are carefully designed to facilitate a complementary approach that encourages a transitional process from humanitarian interventions towards development.

UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator, Roberto Valent highlighted that the Community Resilience and Development Programme (CRDP) is an excellent instrument to support the resilience of the Palestinian population in Area C and East Jerusalem, improve their livelihoods, and empower them to advance their own development. “We are proud that through this partnership we have been able to support over 99,045 Palestinian residents in 116 communities in Area C and East Jerusalem,” he added.

The signing ceremony was held on Thursday 01 December 2016 in the presence of Ms Ann-Sofie Nilsson, Swedish Consul General in Jerusalem, Dr Johan Schaar, Head of Sweden Development Cooperation, Mr Maher Daoudi, Senior Programme Manager Humanitarian Assistance (SIDA) and Mr Roberto Valent, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator.

Since its inception in September 2012, the Community Resilience and Development Programme (CRDP) has supported the resilience of Palestinians living in various marginalized communities in Area C and East Jerusalem. Led by the Palestinian Government, CRDP is funded by the Governments of Sweden, Austria, and Norway for an amount of over USD 24 million, and implemented by UNDP. CRDP aims at improving access to public services, economic and social development, and empowering local institutions.
