At a ceremony in New York, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, presented the award to Ambassador Abdallah Y. The Crown Prince Nayef was the Supervisor General of the Saudi Committee for the Palestinian People Relief and the Campaign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for the Relief of the Palestinian People in Gaza, which has given to UN-Habitat financial support of about $17 million since 2007, representing the largest donation to the UN-Habitat Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People.

About the Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People (SHSPPP)

UN-Habitat is mandated to work in Occupied Palestinian Territory since 2003, when its Governing Council created the Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People and the Technical Cooperation Trust Fund (GC 19/18). The resolution was approved by consensus.

In 2011, during the 23rd Governing Council of UN-Habitat, a new resolution was adopted (CG23/2) calling upon UN-Habitat to further focus its operation on planning, land and housing issues with a view to improving the human settlements conditions of Palestinians, addressing the urbanization challenges, supporting the buildings of a Palestinian State and fostering humanitarian action and peace building in the areas where acute humanitarian and development needs.
