EUPOL COPPS supports efforts to end discrimination and violence against women

Ramallah, 25th of November 2014 – On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, EUPOL COPPS is reiterating its commitment to condemn and end discrimination and violence against women and girls, a fundamental pillar and priority for the European Union and the Palestinian Authority.

To further improve the situation in the field of domestic violence, EUPOL COPPS has been supporting the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) Family Protection Unit in close coordination with UN Women, providing technical advice and facilitating capacity building activities. Recently, EUPOL COPPS started a pilot project, to install special interview rooms for children, in the Hebron Family Protection Unit. This project aims to provide safe, confidential and respectful facilities to enhance confidence of the public and particularly children who may be victims of abuse, or those responsible for their care, in seeking police assistance when confronted with domestic and gender-based violence.

EUPOL COPPS has also been supporting the Ministry of Justice in drafting the Family Violence Law, including provision of a model law, based on international standards.

Whilst there is much to do, EUPOL COPPS will maintain momentum in supporting and encouraging a climate where there is less domestic violence in the West Bank.  In these joint efforts, the PA is willing and positive partners.
