Death of Ziad Abu Ein – statement by the FDFA

The FDFA has learned with great concern of the death of the Palestinian minister Ziad Abu Ein following an intervention by the Israeli security forces at a demonstration near Ramallah.

The FDFA extends its sincere condolences to the victim's loved ones and to the Palestinian government.

Ziad Abu Ein will be remembered in Switzerland as a valued member of the Geneva Initiative, which Switzerland supports. Switzerland acknowledges his efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East and calls on the Israeli authorities to ensure a swift, independent and transparent investigation into his death.

Regarding this latest, tragic development, the FDFA asks all parties to refrain from provocations and violence and to work with the international community towards the resumption of peace negotiations.
