THE CRISIS IN YARMOUK CAMP
06 JULY 2014
Our spokesperson Chris Gunness has the following to say on the situation in Yarmouk Camp
"Since 23 May 2014, there has been no distribution of UNRWA food parcels to civilians in Yarmouk. UNRWA distribution of hygiene kits in Yarmouk last took place on 7 June 2014. UNRWA views with growing alarm the continuing absence of authorization to resume the distribution of food and other humanitarian assistance inside Yarmouk. It is distressing to consider the likelihood that this protracted break in UNRWA food distribution may be contributing to hunger and malnutrition among Yarmouk’s civilians.
"UNRWA is urgently seeking a resumption of its food distribution and other humanitarian activities inside Yarmouk, and is strongly renewing its appeals to Syrian authorities and other concerned parties immediately to make this resumption possible. The suffering of civilians in Yarmouk should not be further prolonged. UNRWA as always stands ready to implement a rapid humanitarian programme to address the immediate and longer term needs of the civilians of Yarmouk.
"UNRWA will maintain its advocacy for continuous, substantial and safe humanitarian access to Yarmouk, and for the protection of Palestinian and Syrian civilians."
