THE CRISIS IN YARMOUK CAMP

Our spokesperson Chris Gunness has the following to say on the situation in Yarmouk Camp
“There was no distribution of humanitarian assistance in Yarmouk today, 18 August. This is the ninth consecutive day that UNRWA has not been authorized to distribute any humanitarian assistance in Yarmouk, with sporadic armed violence affecting the area over the last weeks. UNRWA is concerned that its last food distribution in Yarmouk took place on July 24th, with provided supplies expected to run out after ten days. The Agency continues to appeal to the Syrian authorities to facilitate a resumption of humanitarian operations as a matter of urgency.
“UNRWA is deeply concerned that the recourse to armed violence continues to interrupt life-saving humanitarian operations in Yarmouk. The humanitarian situation in Yarmouk remains desperate and UNRWA appeals to all parties to do everything in their power to end the suffering of the over 18,000 civilians trapped there. The Agency will continue to seek from all sides conditions that enable UNRWA to offer a full range of humanitarian assistance and services inside Yarmouk on an interrupted, substantial and safe basis.”
