Adoption of the agenda
The agenda was adopted.
The situation in the Middle East
Report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of Security Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978) (S/2000/590)
Mr. Sergeev (Russian Federation) (spoke in Russian): Before we take a decision on the important item that has been before the Security Council for some time now, we should like to ensure that there is complete understanding among Council members on all aspects of the issue, especially given the fact that, as far as we know, there is additional information directly related to this item. In this connection, the Russian delegation would request that the meeting be suspended so that the Council might return to consultations. The meeting could be resumed later and, I hope, a decision taken.
Mr. Eldon (United Kingdom): Every delegation has the right to ask for a break in the meeting, as you know, Sir, and we would not object if the representative of Russia wished to do that. I would simply point out, though, that the matter that we are currently considering is urgent and that we have already spent a long time considering it. As far as my delegation is concerned, we hope very much that the break will be brief and that we will be able to resume this formal meeting extremely quickly.
The President (spoke in French): At the request of the representative of the Russian Federation, I shall now suspend the meeting for what I hope will be only a few moments.
The meeting was suspended at 10.15 a.m. and resumed at 3.45 p.m.
The President (spoke in French): The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda. The Security Council is meeting in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.
Members of the Council have before them the report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of Security Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978), document S/2000/590.
Following consultations among members of the Security Council, I have been authorized to make the following statement on behalf of the Council:
This statement will be issued as a document of the Security Council under the symbol S/PRST/2000/21.
The Security Council has thus concluded the present stage of its consideration of the item on its agenda.
The meeting rose at 3.55 p.m.
