The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. António Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, on the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon.
The President of the General Assembly thanked Prime Minister Costa for Portugal’s gracious hospitality and congratulated the Portuguese Government on the outstanding work done to host an event of such high importance as the 2022 UN Ocean Conference.
President Shahid commented on Portugal’s impressive record on multilateralism and pointed out that the consensus reached on the political declaration would allow the international community to speak in one voice.
Prime Minister Costa thanked the President of the General Assembly for his presence in the Conference and underscored that it was an honour to host the event considering the Portuguese people’s connection to the ocean. Prime Minister Costa also commended President Shahid for his leadership role in the Our Common Agenda (OCA) consultative process, highlighting his confidence that the OCA process would lead to a stronger United Nations.
The meeting took place in the office of the President of the General Assembly at the Ocean Conference main venue in Lisbon.
