High-Level Thematic Debate: Galvanizing Momentum for Universal Vaccination

25-Feb-2022

GALVANISING MOMENTUM  for

UNIVERSAL VACCINATION

February 2022, New York

General Assembly Hall & Online

Overview

Pursuant to the letter from the President of the General Assembly dated 15 November 2021, the President will convene a one-day High-level Thematic Debate entitled “Galvanising Momentum for Universal Vaccination”, in February 2022 (TBC), in the General Assembly Hall, United Nations Headquarters. The High-level Thematic Debate, which will take place in a hybrid format, will comprise of an Opening Segment, Multi-Stakeholder Panels, and a High-level Plenary and will take place in a hybrid format.

Background

Globally, the pace and reach of COVID-19 vaccinations has been uneven, unfair, and unbalanced. Only 5 percent of people in Least Developed Countries have been vaccinated versus more than 70 percent in high income countries.

This is unacceptable and not only leaves billions of people unfairly exposed to the virus but jeopardizes hard-won gains in the fight against the pandemic as mutations and variants continue to occur, people continue to suffer and die, and economic losses continue to mount.

Recognizing that no one is safe until we are all safe – a reality further underscored by the rise of the omicron variant of COVID-19 – our only respite from the global pandemic is to successfully ensure vaccine access in all corners of the world, for everyone, everywhere.

Discussion

The discussions at the High-Level Meeting will be guided by the following questions:

  1. What is the state of play in vaccine production and supply against the global need?
  2. What are the constraints in vaccine production, distribution and administration of vaccines in different countries and regions?
  3. What are the technical, financial and other arrangements needed to ensure that vaccines are available for everyone everywhere by the end of 2022?
