The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Ms. Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the Prime Minister of Iceland, on the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon.

 

The President of the General Assembly commended Iceland for its strong support for multilateralism and for leading by example on the humanitarian front by taking in refugees from Ukraine. 

 

The President of the General Assembly also briefed Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir on the priorities of his Presidency of Hope, especially in matters pertaining to the empowerment of women and youth as well as the fight against climate change.

 

Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir welcomed the opportunity to discuss Iceland’s foreign policy and expressed concern about the growing sources of pressure points for multilateralism, such as the war in Ukraine and the food and energy crises. 

 

The Prime Minister commended President Shahid’s environmental priorities. She also talked about her expectations from the ongoing Ocean Conference.

 

The meeting took place in the office of the President of the General Assembly at the Ocean Conference main venue in Lisbon.
