Meeting between President of the General Assembly and Executive Secretary of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today, with Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, Under-Secretary-General, and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The Executive Secretary pledged the continued support of the UNCCD to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including the specific priorities identified in the President’s “five rays of hope” for the 76th session. The Executive Secretary also briefed the President on the ongoing preparations for UNCCD COP 15 which will take place in the second and third week of May in Cote d’Ivoire. President Shahid offered the Executive Secretary his fullest support to raising awareness around the important issues concerning land degradation, desertification and draughts.

The President and the Executive Secretary also discussed the inter-linkages between the sustainable use of land, climate change, sustainable development, and the ocean.
