The item entitled “Observer status for the Eurasian Economic Union in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventieth session of the General Assembly at the request of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Russian Federation (A/70/141).

At its seventy-ninth session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its eightieth session (decision 79/527).

Consideration at the eightieth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 37th meeting, on 14 November 2025 (see A/C.6/80/SR.37). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a letter dated 30 April 2015 from the Permanent Representatives of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Russian Federation to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General; Observer status for the Eurasian Economic Union in the General Assembly (A/70/141).

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At its 37th meeting, on 14 November 2025, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Belarus, on behalf of the sponsors, had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Eurasian Economic Union in the General Assembly until the eighty-first session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee decided to recommend that the General Assembly defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Eurasian Economic Union in the General Assembly to the eighty-first session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the eighty-first session (2026).
