The item entitled “Observer status for the Global Environment Facility in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventy-second session of the Assembly at the request of Uruguay (A/72/195). The Assembly has had the item on its agenda annually since the seventy-second session (decisions 72/527, 73/538, 74/527 and 75/533).

At its seventy-fifth session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its seventy-sixth session (decision 75/533).

Consideration at the seventy-sixth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 28th meeting, on 10 November 2021 (see A/C.6/76/SR.28). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a note verbale dated 12 August 2017 from the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General (A/72/195).

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 28th meeting, on 10 November, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Uruguay had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Global Environment Facility in the General Assembly until the seventy-seventh session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision under which the General Assembly would decide to defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Global Environment Facility in the General Assembly to the seventy-seventh session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the seventy-seventh session (2022).
