By the letter dated 13 March 2014 (A/69/142), the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the sixty-ninth session.

Consideration at the sixty-ninth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 10th and 18th meetings, on 14 and 23 October 2014 (see A/C.6/69/SR.10 and 18).

Statements were made by the representatives of Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Nigeria and the Russian Federation.

Some delegations expressed their support for the granting of observer status to the Developing Eight Countries Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) in the General Assembly. They underlined the vast potential for development in the D-8 community, and stressed that the objectives of the organization were consistent with those of the United Nations.

A request was made for additional documents that would establish the legal personality of the organization, specifically referencing its 2012 Charter. Pakistan stated that it was ready to assist in this regard and provide any documents requested.
