The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 4th and 17th meetings, on 4 and 21 October 2011 (see A/C.6/66/SR.4 and 17).

Statements were made by the representatives of the United Arab Emirates, Belarus and Saudi Arabia.

A view was expressed in support for the granting of observer status to the International Renewable Energy Agency in the General Assembly.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 4th meeting, on 4 October 2011, the representative of the United Arab Emirates, on behalf of Afghanistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Monaco, Norway, Qatar, Slovenia, the Sudan, Tonga and the United Arab Emirates, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the International Renewable Energy Agency in the General Assembly” (A/C.6/66/L.4). Subsequently, Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Montenegro, Nauru, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the United States of America joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

At its 17th meeting, on 21 October 2011, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/66/L.4 without a vote.

Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the  International Renewable Energy Agency to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and would request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
