Presentation of the 2023 CDP Report to ECOSOC

On 7 June 2023, Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Chair of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP), introduced the Committee’s Report on its 25th Session at ECOSOC's 2023 Management Segment. The report is available here in all six UN languages. Responding to the mandate to examine and make recommendations on ECOSOC’s annual theme, it addresses just transition, the external debt crisis and the voluntary national reviews (VNRs). In the fulfillment of the Committee’s functions related to the least developed country (LDC) category, it contains the results of the reviews of the LDC criteria and of the recognition and use of the LDC category by UN development system entities; and reports on the monitoring of countries that are graduating or have graduated from the list of LDCs and on the Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism. In her statement, the Chair stressed the CDP’s key findings and recommendations on each of these topics. Read the statement here.

Following the introduction of the report, ECOSOC adopted the resolution on the report which, among other items, recommends that the General Assembly extend the preparatory period preceding the graduation of Solomon Islands from the LDC category; and recommends that the General Assembly defer the graduation of Angola. The outcome of ongoing consultations on Angola under enhanced monitoring mechanism will be reported back to ECOSOC for consideration in 2024.

The event was live streamed and can be watched at UN Web TV (the presentation of the report starts at 13:30).

More information on the graduation process and the status of Angola’s and Solomon Island’s graduation can be found on the LDC Portal.
