High-level Briefing on Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development
The Development Research Branch (DRB) organized a High-level Briefing on Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development on 1 November 2018 at UN Headquarters in New York. Moderated by Mr. Elliott Harris, United Nations Chief Economist and Assistant-Secretary-General for Economic Development, the briefing featured a panel that consisted of H.E. Mr. Juan Sandoval Mendiolea, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Mexico, H.E. Mr. Philip Ochen Odida, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Uganda, Pedro Conceição, Director of Strategic Policy, Bureau for Policy and Programme Support of the United Nations Development Programme, and Hamid Rashid, Chief of DRB. Hamid presented the key findings of the World Economic and Social Survey 2018: Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development, which sparked a lively discussion on various impacts of frontier technologies. Congratulating DESA for its leadership, Ambassador Mendiolea called the Survey “revealing and rewarding”. He appreciated the fact that the Survey covers many important issues that are currently being discussed in the context of new General Assembly resolution focusing on the impact of rapid technological change on the Sustainable Development Goals, which follows the adoption of Resolution 72/242 in December 2017. Ambassador Odida and Mr. Conceição similarly praised the high quality and broad scope of the Survey, calling for connecting the findings and key recommendations of this Survey with the ongoing deliberations in the General Assembly and other multi-stakeholder fora. A large number of delegates and representatives of different United Nations entities attended the briefing.
