Developing productive capacity: lessons learned from LDCs

On 21 March 2017, during its 19th Plenary Session the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) held a side event to brief delegates on lessons learned in building productive capacity in least developed countries (LDCs). The work of the CDP analysed the experiences of twelve current and former LDCs as well as two non-LDCs and identified three distinct pathways for graduation from the LDC category.

Moderated by CDP member Professor Giovanni Andrea Cornia, the CDP panelists Professors Hassan, Nurse, Petrin, and Tsikata discussed the results of a detailed review of the experiences made by these countries, covering the five policy areas identified by the CDP in 2016 as critical for expanding productive capacities for sustainable development: good development governance; inclusive social policies; supportive macroeconomic and financial policies; tailored industrial and sectoral policies; and strengthened international support measures.
