MIDDLE EAST: The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed Larsen, attended today the conference on Palestinian Reform hosted by the government of Great Britain. Even though the Palestinian delegation was not able to attend, Roed-Larsen said that this meeting has been invaluable by facilitating a clear and sensible discussion about the progress on reform and what is still needed.  It also sends a strong message to Palestinians, Israelis and the international community that the Government of Great Britain, working closely with the Quartet (United Nations, United States, Russian Federation and European Union), remains focused on and committed to the Road Map process toward a just and comprehensive for the Middle East.

SECURITY COUNCIL: The Security Council is holding an open meeting today on Children and Armed Conflict with the Secretary-General speaking among 45 speakers in all. The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Olara Otunnu, told the Council that what was needed was systematic monitoring and reporting on the conduct of parties to conflict. He concluded by pointing out two situations of particular concern for their grave impact on children, the Occupied Palestinian territories and the Côte d’Ivoire. Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund, urged the Council to hold those who use children in armed conflicts responsible for their actions.
