ANNAN MEETS WITH YASSER ARAFAT, OTHER VISITING LEADERS
"The Secretary-General on Sunday continued his meetings with visiting leaders in the margins of the high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, beginning with a meeting this morning with Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.
“The Secretary-General briefed President Arafat on the discussions he had with many leaders, including US President George W. Bush and French President Jacques Chirac, on the need for energetic and sustained action to move forward with the Middle East peace process, with particular focus on the Palestinian track.
“President Arafat, who also spoke at the General Assembly debate on Sunday, gave the Secretary-General his full assessment of the current situation and the plight of the Palestinians.
“The Secretary-General assured President Arafat that he would continue his efforts, working closely with other key players, including the United States, the European Union and the Russian Federation.”
