The General Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution supporting the establishment of a monitoring mechanism in the occupied territories. This action followed a meeting of the Security Council on Saturday, which failed to adopt a draft resolution, which would have encouraged the establishment of a monitoring mechanism. The resolution was adopted by the General Assembly by 124 votes in favour, 6 against, with 25 abstentions. By 133 votes in favour to 4 against, with 16 abstentions, the General Assembly also called upon Israel to comply with the Fourth Geneva Convention, which covers the protection of civilians during wartime.
