REGULAR PRESS BRIEFING BY THE INFORMATION SERVICE

Marie Heuzé, Director of the Information Service at Geneva, briefed journalists about the visit of the Secretary-General to the Middle East; the Special Session of the General Assembly on children; the report of the Secretary-General on the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and upcoming press conferences.

Visit of the Secretary-General to the Middle East

Mrs. Heuzé said Secretary General Kofi Annan would travel today from London to Cairo to start his visit in the Middle East. Mr. Annan has meetings scheduled on Wednesday morning with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the country's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Maher El Sayed. While in Cairo, Mr. Annan would also meet the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Amre Moussa. Following his stop in Egypt, the UN Secretary-General will proceed to Damascus on Wednesday and Amman on Thursday. The following day, he is scheduled to visit Lebanon. He will be in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Saturday and to Ramallah on Sunday. A detailed schedule of the Secretary-General's visit is available in the press room.
