Gaza – 19 April 2001 – Today, United Nations Special Co-ordinator, Terje Roed-Larsen, met Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.  They discussed a range of issues including security questions, political issues, the economic crisis in the Palestinian territories and the humanitarian situation.

Mr. Larsen focused in particular on Israel's restrictions on the movement of UN personnel in Gaza and the West Bank, he referred, in particular, to the blockage this morning of an UNRWA convoy trying to reach the south of Gaza.  Mr. Larsen said "these restrictions were in violation of Israeli international obligations".  He also said that UNRWA's work was of critical importance and he expressed his full support for UNRWA Commissioner-General Peter Hansen's efforts.

Foreign Minister Peres invited Commissioner-General Hansen and Special Co-ordinator Larsen to meet with him in person tomorrow to discuss a full range of issues related to humanitarian access.
