UN Palestine Commission – Security Force for Jerusalem – Communication from the Jewish Agency for Palestine

UNITED NATIONS PALESTINE COMMISSION

COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM THE JEWISH AGENCY

FOR PALESTINE CONCERNING SECURITY FORCE FOR JERUSALEM AREA

The following communication, concerning the use of Scandinavian forces for the maintenance of law and order in the Jerusalem area, has been received from Mr. Shertok of the Jewish Agency.

THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE
16 East 66th Street
New York 21, 11.Y.

March 22, 1948

Mr. Karel Lisicky, Chairman

United Nations Palestine Commission

Lake Success, New York

Sir:

In the light of the gravity of the security situation with respect to Jerusalem and of the difficulties that the Commission has encountered in regard to the establishment of a security force for Palestine as a whole, I venture to submit the following thought for the consideration of the Palestine Commission.

It is understood that Scandinavian forces are at present stationed in Germany in connection with the Allied Military Occupation of that country. The suggestion is made in this connection that the matter of Jerusalem be treated separately from that of the general security problem in Palestine, and the question be explored as to the possibility of securing the use of these Scandinavian forces for the defence of and the maintenance of law and order in the Jerusalem area.

Yours sincerely,

(signed) M. SHERTOK
