Palestinian Police Accountability

Ramallah, 24 April 2013 – Officials from the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) conducted a workshop to discuss the draft national strategy for Palestinian police accountability together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Coordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support (EUPOL COPPS) at the Red Crescent Conference Centre in Ramallah.

The workshop brought together members of the PCP oversight units, with representatives from Palestinian Authority institutions and civil society to discuss the draft national strategy on civil police accountability and the steps forward for its implementation.

The first of its kind in the Arab world, he new strategy aims at enhancing public trust and strengthening accountability within PCP, in addition to raising awareness about the role and mandate of Palestinian Civil police.

The workshop is part of a USD 3.5 million programme on enhancing transparency and accountability developed in partnership between the Palestinian Authority, civil society, UNDP and EUPOL COPPS and funded by the Governments of Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden.  The programme, based on rule of law and respect for human rights, aims at strengthening internal police accountability, national anti-corruption efforts and the oversight role of civil society in democratic governance and preparation for statehood.
