Didier Reynders condemns decision to approve construction of 2,610 homes in Givat HaMatos
date: 04 October 2014
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders, like the High Representative of the European Union Cathy Ashton, condemns the Israeli authorities' decision to approve the building plans of 2,610 homes in Givat HaMatos. This announcement represents a direct threat to the two-state solution and the vocation of Jerusalem to be the capital of both states. If this decision stood, doubt would be cast on Israel's commitment to a negotiated solution with the Palestinians.
Belgium recalls that settlements are illegal under international law and calls on Israel to reverse this decision and, more generally, to immediately end settlement activities in East Jerusalem and throughout the West Bank. Like the European Union, Belgium will not recognise any change to the 1967 borders other than agreed by both parties. Belgium also recalls, like the EU, that the development of its relations with Israel depends on its commitment to a lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
This new development also highlights, once again, the need for an urgent resumption of negotiations to allow the emergence of a sovereign Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.
