2 February In an ambush near Hebron, three Israeli settlers were shot and injured by Palestinian gunmen.  (Al-Ittihad)  Two young Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops. (The Jerusalem Press)

3 February The Working Group of the Multilateral Negotiations on Security and Arms Control agreed in Cairo on a draft accord concerning the limitation of arms proliferation in the Middle East. (Al-Ittihad)

An Israeli undercover security unit shot dead a leader of the Fatah-Hawks and injured five others in Rafah refugee camp.  Israeli troops later on opened  fire  on  demonstrators  in the camp and injured 2 boys under 13.  (Al-Ittihad)

4 February Four young Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops in Rafah refugee camp.  An armed Palestinian group opened fire at a military patrol in Khan Younis.  Three molotov bombs were thrown at military posts in Khan Younis refugee camp.  (The Jerusalem Press)

6 February Israeli  troops  shot and injured 4 Palestinians in Jabalia refugee camp.  (Al-Ittihad) Two molotov bombs were thrown at a military patrol in Gaza City.  (The Jerusalem Press)

7 February Two Palestinians were shot and injured by the Israeli army in Jabalia refugee camp.  (Al-Ittihad)  A "suspected collaborator" was found shot dead in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City.  (The Jerusalem Press)

8 February The Israeli army shot and injured 12 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and 2 others in the West Bank.  (Al-Ittihad)

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Yossi Beilin met in Washington, separately, with a special envoy of the Sultanate of Oman and with Qatar's Ambassador to Washington.  (Al-Ittihad)

9 February PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres, the Israeli Foreign Minister, initialed an agreement, entitled "The Cairo Agreement", on key security issues to be included in the "Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements", signed on 13 September 1993.  (The New York Times)

13 February An Israeli security agent was shot dead and 2 of his colleagues were injured by Hamas gunmen in Beitunia near Ramallah.  Five Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip. (The Jerusalem Press)

14 February The French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, met with a Palestinian delegation headed by Feisal Husseini in Jerusalem.  (The Jerusalem Press)

A UNESCO delegation visited the occupied Palestinian territories to review tourism and archaeological matters.  (The Jerusalem Press)

15 February In overnight clashes in several areas of the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian was killed and 20 others were shot and injured by Israeli troops.  (The Jerusalem Press)

16 February The Foreign Minister of Portugal, Jose Manuel Barroso, met in Jerusalem with a Palestinian delegation led by Feisal Husseini.  He met in Israel with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. (The Jerusalem Press)

18 February A Hamas unit ambushed an Israeli car near Hebron, killing a pregnant Jewish settler.  (The Washington Post)

22 February A "suspected collaborator" was shot dead by a Hamas unit of Izziddin Qassam in the Gaza neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan.  Israeli troops shot and injured two Palestinians in Jenin.  (The Jerusalem Press)

25 February A Jewish settler from Kiryat Arba fired an automatic machine gun on Palestinian worshippers during their morning prayer in the Hebron Ibrahimi Mosque on Friday, 25 February.  The number of casualties was put by the Palestine Human Rights Information Center (PHRIC) at 48 dead and 250 injured.  Other sources reported 43 dead and yet others indicated that more than 50 people were killed in the mosque.  The settler, born in the United States, was himself killed by survivors.

Following the massacre in Hebron, Israeli troops shot dead at least 12 Palestinians and injured more than 100 others during protests all over the occupied territories.  (Reuters)

28 February The United Nations Security Council began debate on the Hebron massacre under agenda item "The situation in the occupied Arab territories".

Syria, Jordan and Lebanon informed the Clinton Administration that they were breaking off peace talks with Israel in response to the massacre in Hebron.  (The New York Times)
