Press freedom, development and poverty discussed by Palestinian journalists on 3 May

The challenges and opportunities facing Palestinian media and press freedom were among the topics discussed by prominent Palestinian media professionals and representatives of international correspondents in a seminar organized by the Birzeit University Media Institute and UNESCO to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on 3 May.

The event gathered 30 prominent journalists from daily newspapers, Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation, local private television and radio stations and international news organization such as BBC, Al Jazeera, Reuters and AP.

Palestinian journalists emphasized a need for strengthened cooperation and networking of local media outlets and professionals in order to maintain independence of media and avoid attempts to control media and threats against journalists. The strong presence of international news media has created an exceptional situation for Palestinian media. Local media needs to provide more economical, social, cultural and human interest news stories from local perspective to be able to provide alternative coverage and compete with international satellite televisions and news agencies.

Another topic of the seminar, media's role in development and poverty eradication, is becoming more crucial in a present economical and financial situation in Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The lack of reporting on positive developments and local success stories that could empower especially poor people was considered a major shortcoming of Palestinian media, while overpolitization of news coverage and media which can contribute towards creating a more passive society and a sense of hopelessness, was one of the conclusions of the discussion.

The issue of Palestinian monthly magazine This Week in Palestine, supported by UNESCO Office Ramallah, is dedicated to Press Freedom and Palestinian media. The articles cover various topics such as media legislation reform, media ethics, online journalism, use of ICT in networking of special interest groups and challenges of independent media in new political situation.
