Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton on the

appointment of Dr. Rami Hamdallah as the new Prime

Minister of the Palestinian Authority

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"I congratulate Dr. Rami Hamdallah on his appointment as the next Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. Mr. Hamdallah has been appointed Prime Minister at a time when there is a real opportunity for a renewed peace process, but also at a time of difficult choices and challenges for Palestine. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Hamdallah and to supporting the continuing work to build the institutions of a future sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on respect for democracy and human rights and living in peace and security with its neighbours.

I would also like to express my sincere appreciation for outgoing Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad's consistent and successful work to advance the Palestinian Authority's state-building efforts."
