Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ statement regarding the reopening of direct talks between the Israelis and Palestinians

Thursday, 01 August 2013

Greece welcomes the reopening of the direct talks between the Israelis and Palestinians on 29 July 2013, in Washington.

The Greek government expresses its great respect for U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who, making tireless efforts and showing methodical persistence, contributed substantially to the two sides’ returning to the negotiating table. The Greek government also congratulates Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian President Abbas for their political courage, responsibility and determination.

We look forward to the two sides’ participating in the negotiations in a constructive and conciliatory spirit that cultivates a climate of trust, to the benefit of their peoples.

Greece, in line with the EU’s longstanding positions, considers that the viability of the two-state solution is what is most at stake, and we are prepared to contribute in every possible way – particularly within the framework of the upcoming Greek EU Presidency – to a successful outcome in the negotiations.
