Secretary General Investigates Situation in Iraq & Palestine with Solana (11-1-2005)

During his meeting with High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, Mr. Javier Solana, Secretary General Amre Moussa of the Arab League investigated the latest developments in Iraq and Palestine in view of the Palestinian elections and Solana's visit to the Palestinian territories.

Official Spokesman Hossam Zaki of the Arab League Secretary General said Secretary General Moussa listened to Solana's evaluation of the objective of achieving progress in the status quo through encouraging all parties to resume political dialogue and collaboration. On his part, Moussa explained to Solana that a ray of light may come about if all parties assume new approach and thought during the upcoming period of time in view of the implementation of the Roadmap and adoption of the Arab initiative's spirit and components. Moussa further explained that the atmosphere in the region would remain tense if the causes remain unchanged. In the meantime, he stressed the Arab League's willingness to provide support and work with serious parties in order to achieve just and lasting peace in the region.

As regards Iraq, Spokesman Zaki pointed out Solana's enquiry about Secretary General Moussa's evaluation of the status quo there. He said they tackled the latest developments concerning the elections as a start of a political process to be completed by the end of this year.

In this regard, Moussa explained to Solana that the elections would act as an essential and significant phase if factors of credibility are made available to have it serve as a means by which to bring various components of the Iraqi society together. He also said hard work is required in order to ensure unanimous partaking by all Iraqis in the political process that involves the elections, constitution drafting and government formation, as the only proper way to restore stability in Iraq.
