91. Ms. SAYEGH (General Arab Women Foundation), speaking also on behalf of the All Indian Women’s Conference, Educational Development, the Union of Arab Jurists, the World Movement of Mothers and the World Young Women’s Christian Association, said that despite negotiations between Israel and Palestine, the illegal construction of the Separation Wall, the confiscation of Palestinian land and property and the demolition of private homes continued. The Israeli Government’s policy was to transfer its civilian population into Palestinian areas and appropriate Palestinian land and resources, which would make the formation of a viable Palestinian State impossible. Such policies violated international law and denied the Palestinian people their right to self-determination. Peace could not be achieved as long as the occupation continued.

93. The policy of imposing a model of freedom and democracy by threats and interference in the internal affairs of countries had recently been applied through the adoption of United Nations Security Council resolution 1559 (2004) regarding Lebanon and Syria. That policy of imposition would not increase the promotion of human rights or stability in the Middle East region, and was evidence of double standards, since equal pressure had not been placed on Israel to comply with United Nations resolutions, stop expansionist plans and dismantle nuclear weapons. The use of force in international relations constituted a serious threat to or an actual violation of the right to life, and the Commission and the United Nations must make efforts to put a rapid halt to military occupation; provide full protection to the Iraqi people; reappoint a Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iraq; and stop United States threats of sanctions or interference in the internal affairs of countries in the Middle East. Attempting to force countries into obedience led to despair, hate and conflict.
